Little Shanghai Restaurant, located in the heart of San Mateo, is a true gem for lovers of authentic Shanghainese cuisine. This cozy yet bustling eatery brings the rich flavors of Shanghai’s culinary heritage to the Bay Area with a diverse menu that highlights both traditional and innovative dishes. From the moment you step inside, the warm and lively atmosphere perfectly complements the inviting aroma of expertly prepared Chinese fare.
The menu at Little Shanghai reads like a love letter to Shanghai’s vibrant food culture. Signature dishes such as the Steamed Meat Balls—a delicacy that requires advance reservation—showcase the chef’s dedication to preserving authentic recipes with a delicate, melt-in-your-mouth texture. Another standout is the Fried River Shrimp 清炒蝦仁, where each bite bursts with fresh seafood flavor, cooked to a perfect light crisp that awakens the palate.
The Clay Pot Rice with Chinese Ham & Bok Choy is a comforting, hearty choice infused with layers of smoky, savory goodness and tender vegetables. Equally captivating are dishes like the Shanghai Style Ribs and the Sweet and Sour Fish, which balance rich, bold flavors with subtle tanginess that is emblematic of Shanghainese cooking. Vegetable lovers won’t be disappointed by offerings like the Spinach in Ginger Sauce or the Fry Cooked String Beans—both fresh and vibrant, providing a light counterpoint to the heartier meat and seafood options.
Many diners, like Maria Stoimenova, rave about the pork belly—or Dong Po Pork—which she describes as a luscious, mouth-melting experience. The overall consensus from regular patrons is clear: come hungry and leave amazed. Yet, despite its popularity and often busy, lively crowd, service remains quick and friendly, with staff who bring a sense of warmth and humor to the dining experience. This friendly, bustling environment gives Little Shanghai a charm reminiscent of a busy Shanghai neighborhood restaurant, filled with chatter and the clinking of dishes.
Special mentions from guests also highlight the Duck Soup as a must-try and praise the surprisingly broad menu that offers everything from soups like the Fish Head Casserole to popular noodle and rice dishes such as Curry Chicken Fried Rice and Preserved Veg and Shredded Pork Fried Rice. It’s clear that each dish is thoughtfully crafted to deliver authentic tastes that transport diners straight to the streets of Shanghai.
While the restaurant's intimate space leads to lively chatter—sometimes reaching a boisterous pitch—this adds to its authentic charm and neighborhood feel. Longtime visitors, like Dharma M, appreciate not only the quality and portions but also the restaurant’s commitment to maintaining authenticity and reasonable pricing over the years.
For those craving a genuine Shanghainese dining adventure in the Bay Area, Little Shanghai Restaurant offers a compelling blend of rich tradition, flavor-packed dishes, and a genuine community vibe. Whether you are a first-timer or a returning patron, each visit promises a sensory journey deeply rooted in the heart of Shanghai’s culinary heritage.
Love this place. Their food is so flavorful! The pork belly ( Dong Po Pork) is my go to dish every time I visit as it melts in your mouth but it is supper rich …we tried the sweet and sour spare ribs and the were also amazing. Make sure to come hungry…Service is fast and friendly, they are often busy with large groups, but we never had to wait long.
A Shanghainese friend of mine says this is one of the best Shanghainese food he has eaten in the Bay Area after all these years. Also the fact that the owner can just shut down for a month at a time to take vacation overseas says how established they are; customers will and keep coming back.
Visited again - updated Their food was great. We tried “weekend special limited donuts and soup”. Shanghai noodle cake was really good. The food is delicious! It’s really crowded and packed with people. The variety of the menu is surprising, you better check the menu and what to order before going there. Yes, the staff was friendly and funny as many people mentioned!
Authentic Shanghsiese Crusine. All dishes we ordered are good. Take us back time to China...lot of vegetables dishes to select. Tasty but not greasy. The duck soup is a must try.
I've been visiting this restaurant for many years when I want Shanghai food. It serves authenticate Shanghai dishes and common chinese dishes. Price is reasonable, and portion is good. The food is yummy. The noise is a bit unbearable because it has a low ceiling, and when people start talking, it is pretty noisy. I like the spicyvpork noodle soup. The xioa long bao is good, but the skin is too thick. The spicy pork stomach is ok. It is kind of boiled and just mixed with the chili sauce. The chinese donut is fresh and crunchy. It seems they have too much msg in one dish. After the meal, I felt thirsty for quite some time.
Fast-paced restaurant with delicious Shanghai food. I would highly recommend their dessert of Mini Sesame Dumplings in Rice Wine Sauce (酒釀). For entrees, #703: Gi Chai w/Bamboo Shoots is my favorite vegetable dish while #301: Sweet & Sour Spare Ribs Shanghai Style. Their dim sum is on the more expensive side, and I found one of their classics #9: Shanghai Fried Pork Buns to not be the most flavorful. The restaurant has a small interior with a low ceiling. There are limited parking spots by the side. The staff are very friendly and speak both English and Chinese. They will even help ladle out soup and pack the food for you!
